OS Landranger  - Ordnance Survey’s all purpose maps in the scale 1:50,000

The OS Landranger is Ordnance Survey's all-purpose map packed full of information to help you really get to know an area. There are 204 Landranger maps covering the whole of Great Britain.

The maps in this series each cover an area of 40 x 40km (approx. 25 x 25 miles), with roads, tracks and paths, and public rights of way (except in Scotland) marked. Other communications detail includes railways and stations, ferries, bus or coach stations, long distance hiking trails and national/regional cycle network routes.

Steep gradients on roads are indicated.

Contours appear at 10m intervals, spot heights are applied and additional graphics show terrain features such as cliffs, mud, embankments, cuttings and vegetation variations, eg. forest, orchard and parkland. In addition to landmarks, eg. trig pillars, churches, masts, wind generators, isolated buildings and powerlines.

Some tourism features are included such as campsites, information centres, picnic sites, car parks, selected sites of interest and viewpoints. Administrative boundaries are marked and national parks and National Trust access areas are indicated.

The British National Grid is shown at 1km intervals, with latitude and longitude shown by margin ticks at intervals of 1' and cross hairs on the map at intervals of 5'.

The map legend is in English, with French and German translations applied to only the communications and tourism details.

OS Explorer  -  Ordnance Survey’s outdoor leisure maps in the scale 1:25,000

Every part of England, Scotland and Wales is covered by 403 OS Explorer Maps specially designed for walkers, off-road cyclists, horse riders and leisure seekers involved in outdoor activities.

This series has replaced the earlier, green-cover Pathfinder maps. The Explorer series is now complete and covers all of England, Wales & Scotland. Some sheets for popular areas like the National Parks are still branded as Outdoor Leisure (OL) maps, but are now included in this series as the cartography is the same as that in the Explorer Maps.

The Explorer maps provide more information than the Pathfinder series, with greater use of colour, larger area per map, and stronger emphasis on information for ramblers and tourists.

These highly detailed maps show all the administrative boundaries, settlements as small as isolated farms, the road network down to unfenced roads and country tracks, and field boundaries (hedges and drystone walls), making navigation across the countryside much easier. Steep gradients on roads are indicated. Various landmarks, such as powerlines, archaeological sites, windmills, churches and lighthouses are shown, and additional graphics indicate natural terrain features such as cliffs, scree, mud and vegetation variations.

Contour interval is 5 metres in the lower parts of the country and 10 metres in the uplands, and spot heights are marked. Each map covers an area of 30 x 20km (approx. 19 x 12 miles), with some double-sided maps covering more, as indicated in the individual descriptions. The maps are fully GPS compatible, with the National Grid shown at 1km intervals and latitude and longitude indicated by margin ticks at 1'.

Explorer maps show a large amount of information for ramblers and tourists. Public rights of way are shown (except in Scotland), together with other routes with public access: National Trails and Recreational Paths, permitted paths and bridleways, and selected cycle routes.

Open access land created under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 is marked. Tourist information includes caravan and camp sites, Park & Ride locations, recreation/leisure/sport centres, museums, historic buildings, English Heritage and National Trust sites, rural pubs, etc. The map legend is in English only, except for the tourist information content which is also in French and German.
